On June 9, 2024, a Facebook post started to get shared a lot by other users. It eventually went viral on social networks. As of July, this post said that families with children would get a $300 direct deposit from the IRS every month as a form of the Child Tax Credit.
The post said, “In 2024, the IRS will send $300 directly to children under the age of six every month on the 15th.”
“People between the ages of 6 and 17 will get $250 every month.” The IRS says that eligible people will start getting monthly CTC 2024 payments on July 15, 2024.
This news is not true because it uses wrong data from the American Rescue Plan.
From July to December 2021, the plan gave advance payments of the child tax credit to parents, not children. Because this program was meant to help people who had been affected by COVID-19, it did not continue.
Is there an IRS child tax credit?
The fake Facebook post started to spread because President Joe Biden’s budget proposal for 2025 includes money to bring back the child tax credit starting in 2021.
This would let families get tax credits through monthly payments. This is not likely to happen, though, since the plan needs to be approved by the House, which is run by Republicans.

In January, the House of Representatives passed a bill to raise the refundable child tax credit. However, the Senate never took up the bill for a vote.
