In California, a scary event happened when a young boy almost died when he shot himself with a gun he found loaded in his mother’s car.
The child’s mother, L. Walker, who is 26 years old, is now facing serious legal consequences for the carelessness that caused her son to get hurt.
The terrible thing happened on a normal-looking Friday afternoon, when Walker left her 4-year-old son in the car while she went to do some shopping.
When the child was left alone, they found a loaded gun that was not locked up in the car. When the gun went off by accident and hurt the boy, things became very dangerous.
Around 1:45 p.m., people in nearby stores heard the child crying out for help and knew something was wrong. A 19-year-old customer at a nearby nail salon named S. Cordoba rushed to help the hurt child who was lying on the ground.
Cordoba said that the boy was awake and told him that he had killed himself. She quickly put pressure on his wound to stop the bleeding and kept him busy while they waited for help to arrive by talking about his hobbies, like his favorite TV show, “Paw Patrol.”
First responders quickly arrived at the scene and started treating the boy’s wound. They made sure he stayed in a safe position until he could be taken to the hospital. Even though he was badly hurt, his injuries were not life-threatening, and he should fully recover.
The police started looking into right away how the child got to the gun. Walker was caught and charged with three felonies: having a gun hidden in a vehicle, storing a gun illegally, and putting a child in danger.
People are very worried about gun safety and what gun owners should do after an accident. The bail amount for Walker was set at $75,000. She paid it on Sunday, which secured her release before her October 30 court date.
A lot of people in the community and beyond have talked about how important gun safety is and how bad it is to be careless with guns.
Officer A. Gamble made it clear that the main goal of the investigation was to find out exactly how the child got near the gun. The boy’s community has come together to help him. Many people are happy that he is alive and worry about his future.
These upsetting events are a somber reminder of how important it is to keep guns safe, especially in places where kids are present.
As the case against Walker goes through the courts, the community is left to think about how dangerous it is to have easy access to guns and how important it is to be alert to stop similar tragedies from happening.
