In a shocking turn of events in Texas, L. Gilley, 38, is now being charged with capital murder for the deaths of his 38-year-old wife C. Bauer and their unborn child.
Gilley was caught after it was said that he had strangled his wife to death, which was different from what he said, that she had killed herself by overdosing.
This terrible event happened there, and Gilley was arrested without bond on Friday, October 11, just a few days after the tragedy.
The case began when Gilley called 911 to say that he had found his wife unconscious from what seemed to be an overdose. Gilley says that he and his wife fought before he went to sleep.
He told the first rescuers that Bauer was in terrible shape when he woke up three hours later, and he tried CPR on her even though she had already killed herself.
But medical professionals saw a very different picture of what was really going on. Bauer went to the hospital and was pronounced dead.
Both the attending hospital doctor and the medical examiner found proof that Bauer had been strangled, not that she had taken too much. The autopsy showed bruises that were consistent with being strangled, and more research raised questions about how she died.
In court papers, prosecutors said that Gilley “intentionally and knowingly caused” Bauer’s death on October 7 by putting “pressure on [her] neck and upper back,” which killed both Bauer and their unborn child.
The couple had been married since 2017 after meeting in college and becoming friends. They seemed to have had a lot of romantic relationships in the past, including a fairy-tale proposal. But what was really going on inside their house looked much worse.
According to court papers, Gilley admitted that his wife was not suicidal and was not known to use drugs while the investigation was going on. This was different from what he told the police at first.
The court papers said, “Defendant admitted wife not suicidal and not a drug user,” which shows that Gilley’s story is very much not consistent. At the time of the alleged murder, only the couple and their two small children were in the house.
This made Gilley’s story of what happened so very suspicious. Medical workers were very important in finding problems with Gilley’s story, which led to his arrest and the charge of capital murder.
Because this shocking event has left everyone in shock, there will be a lighting vigil for Bauer on Tuesday night. The goal of this event is to remember her and give people a place to grieve together.
The case is still developing since Gilley is still in jail awaiting further court hearings. Because there is no release and the charges are very serious, the investigation into Bauer’s death and making sure justice is done for her and her unborn child remain the main goals.
The case had a big impact on the community. It led to discussions about domestic abuse and how important it is to do thorough investigations when first impressions may not be what they seem to be.
