The man accused of stealing a $3k gold-plated rose from a church’s 9/11 memorial laughed through his arraignment on Saturday night as prosecutors listed a string of crimes he allegedly committed in the previous month.
The judge scolded Deikel Alcantara, 21, for his terrible behavior—fidgeting, smiling, and laughing while the court heard about his cruel actions.
A prosecutor told the judge about Alcantara’s alleged crimes. “I do not know if you find this funny, but they are about to ask for bail,” the judge said.
A security guard at the Saint Francis of Assisi church on West 31st Street saw Alcantara enter and says that the suspect ran straight for the gold rose that was the centerpiece of the 9/11 memorial.
The security guard says he told Alcantara not to touch the memorial and then went about his business. Prosecutors say Alcantara then took the gold-plated rose and ran off.
We still do not have that rose back.
The police say that Alcantara has been committing crimes all by himself for the past month.
Police say he hit an old person with a metal pipe on October 24. The person who was hurt got an arm hurt, and he is now being charged with second-degree assault.
Another misdemeanor that we do not know much about is also held against the punk.
The assistant district attorney told the court about the horrible things that Alcantara was said to have done.
Judge Haniff told the police, “Let the record show that this defendant has been laughing the whole time.” “To him, this is a big joke,” she said. “This is a big joke for you, right?”
Alcantara’s father turned him in to the police on Friday night.
He was told to post $75,000 bail.
One count of grand theft is being brought against him for taking the rose.
Alcantara has to go back to court on Tuesday.
