My heart goes out to Mathieu Vigier Latour’s family. He was 24 years old. After a botched beard transplant went wrong, the young man killed himself.
When you are not there, it is easy to make fun of the young man and wonder if he was selfish.
But by saying that, you are ignoring the very real mental health crisis this man was having and the terrible things that happened afterward. Do not be that person. We should pay attention to and respect Mathieu so that similar stories do not happen again.
In March, Latour got a new beard by going to Istanbul, Turkey. He had $1,300 saved up for the surgery. In France, where he was born and raised, the surgery would have cost five times as much. Latour would quickly figure out why the price was so low.
The surgeon messed up the beard transplant in the end. So, the 24-year-old developed a very bad case of body dysmorphia. He started to think badly of how he looked, which caused a mental breakdown.
Botched Beard Transplant
His father, named Mathieu Vigier Latour, told broadcasterĀ BFM TV, “When it started to grow out, it looked like a hedgehog, it was unmanageable.”
His father said that the procedure gave the young man an unnaturally thick beard and badly burned his face and head very badly. It was hard for him to sleep at night because of this.
“He was suffering, he was not doing well,” his dad said. He was in pain, had burns, and could not fall asleep.
His family stepped in to help. They called a specialist in Belgium, but the 24-year-old’s condition could not be fixed by that doctor. The expert told him that his scalp would never be the same after the bad beard transplant.
After three months, he finally killed himself.
His father also said, “He got stuck in a vicious circle and could not get out.” “If this testimony could prevent this from happening again and alert everyone, I think that would be a tribute to Mathieu.”
