On Friday, a Massachusetts man was found guilty of fatally striking his estranged wife in the head with a hammer after breaking into her home.
According to local reports from Berkshire County, Michael Cook Sr., 47, is scheduled to be sentenced on Thursday.
According to Massachusetts Live, the charges included second-degree murder, armed assault with intent to murder, assault with intent to murder, assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon inflicting serious bodily injury, and assault on a family or household member.
Charli Cook, 41, initially endured a traumatic brain injury but passed away five months later.
“I am satisfied with the jury’s decision, despite the fact that today’s guilty verdict cannot reunite Charli with her friends and family.
” In an interview with Springfield NBC/CW affiliate WWLP, Berkshire County District Attorney Timothy Shugrue stated, “Charli, along with her friends and family, deserved justice, and today that justice has been served.”
Charli Cook had previously served as a certified nursing assistant at a convalescent home.
However, according to reports, Michael Cook entered her residence in North Adams on July 11, 2019, and struck her in the back of the skull with a hammer while she was asleep.
According to The Berkshire Eagle, his testimony at trial demonstrated that he was possessive of his wife.
He was also convicted of three counts of raping a child with force and one count of indecent assault and abuse on a child under 14 years old on September 14, 2011.
Shugrue said about the murder, “Domestic violence is a terrible fact of life in the Berkshires.” “We need to work together to stop domestic violence before it happens, help survivors, and get justice for the abuse they went through.”
