Neighbors at a Houston apartment complex became concerned after hearing a loud argument between a resident and her boyfriend late Sunday night, followed by the sound of a gunshot.
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office reported this week that officers responding to a disturbance call discovered 22-year-old Javion Williams dead in the stairwell of the Derby at Steeplechase Apartments, where Williams’ girlfriend Derricka Ross lived.
“He could not be saved and died on the scene from at least one gunshot wound to the head,” a news release from the Harris County Sheriff’s Office stated.
“The victim and defendant were reportedly in a dating relationship,” Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez wrote in a separate social media post, adding that the argument began when Williams arrived at Ross’ apartment to collect his belongings.
Ross was detained and arrested at the scene, according to police. Ross is still being held in Harris County Jail on a $150,000 bond, according to records reviewed by PEOPLE. She’s been charged with murder. It is unclear if Ross has entered a plea.
The couple got into an argument just before neighbors heard a gunshot, according to a Harris County Sheriff’s Office press release.
Fox 26 reported that the incident took place around 9:14 p.m. on May 25. A few minutes later, police received another 911 call, and they believe Ross shot Williams.
“The two had been in a dating relationship and the male complainant had arrived at the apartments with another male friend to move out some of his property from the suspect’s apartment,” according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office. “A verbal argument turned violent when the woman shot the man during the altercation.”
It is unclear what sparked the couple’s argument, but the sheriff’s office claims Ross confessed to her boyfriend’s death at the scene.
