Amendment 1 on the general election ballot appears to be confusing voters across Alabama.
If the bill passes, it will change the state’s constitution.
What was on the ballot was an amendment to the Alabama Constitution of 2022 that would give the Franklin County Board of Education certain sixteenth section and indemnity school land that is owned in fee simple by the Franklin County school.
System, is located in Fayette County and Walker County, and is only for use by schools in the Franklin County School System; and to make sure that the Franklin County Board of Education gets any money made from this land.
Should the bill pass, the Franklin County Board of Education will be able to lease, sell, or manage lands or natural resources from the Walker and Fayette County school systems.
If they are turned down, the Franklin County Board of Education will not be able to rent, sell, or manage lands or natural resources from the Walker and Fayette County school system.
One voter in Alabama wrote on Facebook that this amendment was hard to understand for people who do not live in the area.
“Board of Education for Franklin” “I hope I did the right thing by you all because I had no idea what they were talking about on that ballot,” the post said.
From the thousands of likes, comments, and shares, it is clear that other people were confused too.
“Me too, but it sounded like I was supposed to say yes,” someone wrote.
“I am telling you. “I read it three times,” said someone else. “I was way too sleepy.” So if you want land, land it is… or something”
The Associated Press says that Amendment 1 did pass in the end.
The AP reports that 74.5% of the votes, or 1,058,636 votes, were cast against 25.5%, or 363,038 votes.
