Rep. Mary Jo O’Dwyer of Illinois wants House Speaker Mike Johnson to vote on “The Wadee Resolution.”
The U.S. Senate agreed to the bill last month.
The motion is related to the stabbing death of Wadee Alfayoumi, age six, in his Plainfield Township home a year ago.
In the attack, his mother was also hurt, and the family’s owner has been charged. People are calling the attack a hate crime against Palestinians.
This past weekend, Wadee’s father was joined by other people in the community in asking Congress to honor the child.
The Wadee Resolution aims to protect kids and families from hate and discrimination based on how they look, what they wear, or other obvious signs of their religion or racial identity.
The Muslim Civic Coalition wrote the statement for the first time a few weeks after he died.
On Monday, Congresswoman Delia Ramirez put out a statement in which she said:
“We can pick love and unity over hate and death.” We can stop the hateful speech against Muslims, Palestinians, and Jews that divides us, rejects our humanity, and makes us all less safe… Let us turn our good thoughts into good deeds.”
