The 59th Super Bowl will take place on Sunday between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles. This game is more anticipated than normal because if the Chiefs win, they will become the first team to win the championship three consecutive years.
For those who attend watch parties solely for the advertisements or halftime performance, the Kansas City Chiefs have been on a roll. Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce, the team’s renowned quarterback and tight end, have forged a path into sports history.
Kelce is perhaps most known for his connection with Taylor Swift, who frequently attends her partner’s games. Meanwhile, Mahomes has agreed to appear in dozens of ads and advertising campaigns. He owns an Oakleys business, designs shoes for Adidas, promotes Coors Light, and collaborates with Disney. It would be surprising if a Super Bowl ad did not feature Mahomes.
It seemed hard to stop the duo or the Chiefs as a whole. Although there is no assurance of who will win, the NFL’s own website assigned the Chiefs a 53.3 percent chance of winning as of Feb. 2.
However, there is a distinction between the skill of the players and the pride of the fans. And Philadelphia Eagles fans are more proud of their franchise than most other football fans.
After the Eagles defeated the Washington Commanders on January 26, people flooded the streets of Philadelphia to celebrate. The Eagles’ 55-23 victory guaranteed their trip to the Super Bowl. That same day, the Chiefs won their final game against the Buffalo Bills by three points.
Philly’s early celebration went viral on social media. It was reminiscent of the team’s 2018 Super Bowl victory. After the winner was announced, tens of thousands of supporters flooded the streets of Philadelphia to celebrate. The internet was swamped with videos of fans destroying property.
Aside from the teams and their history, there is a lot of excitement surrounding the halftime show. Kendrick Lamar confirmed in an Instagram video that he would headline the halftime concert.
This sparked its own set of debate. Because the Super Bowl will be held in New Orleans, many fans expected New Orleans Rap Legend Lil Wayne to perform at the halftime show, but were upset when it was revealed that Lamar would instead.
Kendrick Lamar also fought Canadian R&B singer Drake during the summer in what became the most renowned rap duel to date. The conflict has a long history, but it was effectively ended once Lamar released a diss track titled Not Like Us. The song has now received over a billion Spotify streams.
Since the struggle, Lamar has enjoyed considerable commercial success. He held a pop-up concert in Los Angeles for tens of thousands of people, released a chart-topping record in November, and, of course, performed during the halftime show.
Nonetheless, many believe he implicitly criticized Drake in his announcement video for hosting the concert. “You understand there is just one chance to win the championship. “No round twos.” This happened shortly after Drake stated that he was prepared for a “second round.”
Many Brookdale students are also delighted that Jersey’s own SZA will be joining Lamar as a special guest on the halftime stage.
Whether you are a sports enthusiast or a rap fan, this will be a memorable Super Bowl. The game begins at 6:30 p.m. and may be watched on FOX or streamed.
