As of now, the Social Security Administration has confirmed that all couples who are eligible for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) will get an extra $1,450 a month from Social Security.
These people will get an extra payment before the end of the year. The new payment will already include the new 2.5% cost-of-living adjustment that will start in 2025 because January 1 is a holiday.
According to the Social Security payment schedule, this means that SSI recipients who filed as a couple will get the most money on December 29th. Besides this payment, people who benefit from this program will also get the following amounts of money:
SSI benefits | Monthly checks | 2.5% COLA increase | Extra income |
On average | $698 | $715 | $17 |
Individuals | $943 | $967 | $24 |
Couples | $1,415 | $1,450 | $35 |
Essential person | $472 | $484 | $12 |
It is important to note that if your payment does not arrive on time, you should wait at least three mailing days before calling the Social Security Administration.
The delay could be caused by your bank, not the government agency.
You can call the SSA’s customer service, but do not forget that you can also log in to your My Social Security Account and download your financial statements or ask for more information about Social Security.
Which requirements should beneficiaries meet to receive these Social Security benefits?
The AARP said that the US government sends SSI payments but does not pay them. Because of this, the SSI program is paid for by the US Treasury and state-specific supplements, even though most of the benefits are paid for by income taxes.
The goal of this program is to help disabled and elderly people who make less than a certain amount of money. The Social Security Administration says that adults or children may be able to get benefits if:
- Limited or no resources.
- Little to no revenue.
- Have 65 years or older, be blind, or have a disability.
The most a person or couple will be able to get each month in 2024 is $943 for an individual and $1,415 for a couple. But for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), which is also called disability benefits, you need to have worked before.
People who have disabilities and have worked long enough to be eligible for Social Security benefits can get them through the SSDI program. Keep in mind, though, that the SSI program does not require you to have a job history.
Social Security confirmed that applying for SSI benefits will be easier from now on
Recent news from the Social Security Administration (SSA) says that Americans who want to apply for SSI checks will be able to do so faster starting later this year.
According to the press release, the new online system, iClaim, will have clearer questions that will speed up the process for both applicants and judges. But because the new system was put in place so quickly, not all claimants will be able to use it right away.
The SSA says that the December phase is usually open to first-time applicants who are between the ages of 18 and almost 65, have never been married, and are applying for both Social Security and SSI benefits at the same time.
The second stage of this app’s growth is set to start in 2025, and recipients should also be told about it.
What is the difference between SSDI and SSI benefits in the US?
Supplemental Security Income and Social Security Disability Insurance are both programs run by the Social Security Administration (SSA) that help millions of seniors, disabled people, and sometimes children.
However, there are some key differences between the two. The main difference is that SSDI is based on work history and disability, while SSI is based on age, disability, and limited resources and income.
Also, people who get SSI are automatically eligible for Medicaid health insurance in most places. If someone on SSDI gets disability payments for 24 months, they will automatically be eligible for Medicare.
