After an argument over a phone at an apartment complex in North Carolina, a mother is accused of throwing acid on her teenage son and a 14-year-old girl. The mother is now in jail.
It has been charged that Kendra McDougald threw acid, hurt someone seriously, neglected a child, and attacked someone with a deadly weapon.
The crime took place on October 20 at an apartment building on Ponderosa Drive in Dunn, which is 25 miles northeast of Fayetteville. An arrest warrant says that the woman’s chest was burned in the first and second degrees.
WRAL, an NBC affiliate in Raleigh, talked to the boy’s uncle, Larry McDougald. He said that from what he knows, the fight happened over the phone.
Around 40 people were at the apartment at the time, he said. Some of them were fighting and throwing things through the windows. He found his nephew “screaming” in pain when he went to break up the fight.
The person had burns all over their chest. He said it might have been bleach mixed with hot water. The warrant did not say what kind of liquid Kendra McDougald was said to have thrown.
Lawrence Mc Dougald told the TV station, “This turned into something I have never seen before in my life.” “We have to give up on things and let them go before things get worse.” This is my family. I do not want anyone to get hurt, ever.
Both people were taken to the hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.
The North Carolina Department of Adult Correction told Law&Crime in an email that Kendra Mc Dougald was an officer at the Johnston Correctional Institution in Smithfield.
After being arrested last week, she quit her job. A spokesman for the facility said she began working there in May.
She was caught by police on October 24 and taken to the Harnett County Jail, where she has since paid a $125,000 bond. The next time she has to go to court is on December 10.
