Democrats are going through the motions, acting as if they will learn from their 2024 election losses. Democratic governors are already proving that this is not the case.
People showed Democrats they were out of touch with many issues, and illegal immigration was one of them. This helped flip a number of Hispanic districts along the border.
One of those places is Starr County, which has the most Hispanic people in the country (97%). In 2016, 60 points of voters in Starr County chose Hillary Clinton.
In 2020, five points of voters chose Joe Biden. On Tuesday, 16 points of voters switched their votes to support Donald Trump.
During Biden’s presidency, the border crisis has been front and center. It has even reached liberal circles, as illegal immigrants have swarmed Democratic cities like Chicago and New York City.
People just do not want their neighborhoods to become too crowded, housing costs to go through the roof because shelters for the homeless are full, and illegal immigrants to lose access to government services.
But Democratic governors are happy to bring back their sanctuary policies for another election cycle.
“I can promise the undocumented immigrant community in California that I and my team have been thinking about you and the harm that might come from the Trump administration 2.0,” said California Attorney General Rob Bonta, who may run for governor.
This was soon after Trump won the election. We will do everything we can to defend you and will use the full power of our office to do so. Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) wants to make California laws less vulnerable to Trump. This includes making the state less of a sanctuary state.
Both New York Gov. Kathy Hochul and Attorney General Letitia James are making plans to protect the state’s illegal immigrants. Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey said that her state would not help deport illegal immigrants.
This came after she said that the state would be kicking illegal immigrants out of shelters because they were too crowded. Gov. J.B. Pritzker of Illinois has put illegal immigrants first during his time in office.
He now feels like the lead in an action movie and says things like, “A happy warrior is still a warrior” and “You come for my people, you come through me.”
Progressive policies like those proposed by Newsom, Pritzker, and Bonta will bring back the “Resistance”-era mentality of not giving in, no matter how unpopular or harmful they are. This means that the Democratic Party will not be able to think about itself.
That includes giving illegal immigrants more attention and better treatment than everyone else, even though the country strongly rejected those policies on Tuesday.
