This season, three hurricanes caused a lot of damage to hundreds of families in southwest Florida. A lot of them lost power in their homes, which made their food go bad and their food supplies run out.
These people did get help, though, through the D-SNAP benefit, which stands for the Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program in Florida.
In a press release, Secretary Shevaun Harris said, “Our Department has been working hard to help people and families who have been affected by Hurricanes Helene and Milton.”
“One service the Department provides after a storm is funding to replace food lost when hurricanes hit land through the Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (D-SNAP).
We are happy to keep providing both a telephone and in-person application process to give people more than one way to apply.”
Who is eligible for D-SNAP?
Applicants must not be getting regular food assistance in order to be accepted into the program. Also, people who will get the money in the future must have lived in a county that was declared a disaster area during Hurricanes Helene or Milton.
Also, applicants must have lost something because of a disaster, such as:
- Loss of food
- Damage to their home(s) or self-employment property
- Reduction or loss of income
- Other disaster-related expenses
