A man from Norfolk was given five years in jail on Friday for manslaughter without consent and careless gun handling.
Amir Burnett, 14, was shot by Albert James Sutton, 27, while he was showing off a gun in September 2023. Sutton was in charge of a group of about 12 kids.
After killing Burnett, Sutton ran away from the house. When Norfolk police arrived soon after, they found Burnett not responding and a group of children who were not being watched.
Burnett later passed away because of his injuries.
“The death of Amir Burnett was not only a terrible accident; it was also a crime,” said Ramin Fatehi, the Commonwealth’s Attorney. It was Mr. Sutton’s criminal carelessness that killed a child, took the life of another child, and caused other children to see a friend die.
