There will be two SSI checks sent to more than 7 million people in the United States next month. This is because the Social Security Administration changed the usual payment schedule.
There will be an extra SSI check payment in November, which may have caught the attention of some Social Security recipients who were looking at the plan for next month.
People who are very familiar with the administration’s 2024 schedule, which shows when different payments are due throughout the year, might not be as surprised by the small change on the Social Security Administration’s calendar.
Many people who are used to getting their money once a month may still find the change confusing, though.
Everything you need to know about the SSI check payments
SSI check payments for December will be made on the Friday before, since December 1st happens on a Sunday this year. This is because that is when the monthly payment schedule comes in.
If you get SSI benefits, which are payments to disabled and old people with low incomes, the first business day of every month is also the first day of the month. Because of this, SSI checks will be sent out on the following November dates:
- Friday, Nov. 1
- Friday, Nov. 29
Along with these two payouts in November, people who get Supplemental Security Income (SSI) will also get an extra payment on December 31st, since January 1st is a holiday.
When this happens, the federal agency moves the payment to the work day before, so SSI recipients are not affected. Also, the cost of living adjustment (COLA) was finally released on October 10th.
Starting in January 2025, this annual increase will be part of the new SSI checks. This means that people who get SSI will get the following amounts next year:
SSI benefits | Social Security checks | 2.5% COLA increase | Extra income |
On average | $698 | $715 | $17 |
Individuals | $943 | $967 | $24 |
Couples | $1,415 | $1,450 | $35 |
Essential person | $472 | $484 | $12 |
How can Americans qualify for the SSI check payments?
AARP says that the Social Security Administration (SSA) gives out SSI funds but does not pay them. Income taxes pay for most of Social Security payments. SSI, on the other hand, is paid for by the US Treasury and state-specific supplements.
SSI is meant to help people who are crippled or old and make less than a certain amount of money. The Social Security Administration (SSA) says that parents or children may be able to get benefits if they have any of the following:
- Little to no revenue.
- Limited or no resources.
- Have a disability, are blind, or are 65 years or older.
For individuals and couples who qualify, the most that will be paid each month in 2024 is $943 for people and $1,415 for couples.
But Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), which is also called disability payments, is based on how much work you have done in the past.

People with disabilities who have worked long enough to be qualified and paid enough in taxes to Social Security are paid benefits through SSDI. But SSI does not need a past of jobs.
Social Security will introduce a simplified application process for SSI check payments
Last week, the Social Security Administration (SSA) said that later this year, Americans who want to get SSI payments will be able to do so faster and more easily.
The news release says that the new online system, iClaim, has questions that are easier to understand and will speed up the process for both claimants and adjusters.
But even though the new method is going live right away, not all applicants will be able to use it right away.
The SSA says that the December phase will be open to first-time applicants who are between the ages of 18 and almost 65, have never been married, and are asking for both Social Security and SSI at the same time.
Also, people who will benefit should know that the second part of this application process to include more people is set to begin in 2025.
