People who are supposed to get payments in December need to know that they will not be getting any in November. Instead, people who get Supplemental Security Income (SSI) will get two checks this month.
SSI recipients always get their benefits on the first of the month, unless that day is a federal holiday or the weekend. This is because of the annual payment schedule.
As an example, because December 1st is a weekend, the Social Security Administration moved that payment to the business day before.
Because of this, there will be a small change to the regular payment schedule. However, beneficiaries do not need to worry because their benefits will still be sent to them on time.
Eligibility requirements to apply for the SSI check payment
The AARP says that the Social Security Administration (SSA) gives out SSI funds but does not pay them. Most of Social Security benefits are paid for by income taxes.
The SSI program, on the other hand, is funded by the US Treasury and state-specific supplements.
This program is meant to help disabled and elderly people who make less than a certain amount of money. The Social Security Administration says that adults or children may be able to get money if:
- Little to no revenue.
- Limited or no resources.
- Have 65 years or older, a disability, or being blind.
In 2024, the most a person or couple will be able to get each month is $943 for an individual and $1,415 for a couple. But Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), which is also known as disability benefits, is based on work history.
There is a program called SSDI that pays disabled people who have worked long enough to get Social Security benefits. But remember that the SSI program does not need you to have worked before.
When will beneficiaries receive their SSI check payments?
SSI check payments for December will be made on the Friday before the first work day, since December 1st falls on a Sunday this year.
This is in line with the monthly payment schedule. Most of the time, the first business day of the month is also the first day of the month for SSI benefits, which pay disabled and elderly people with low incomes.
Because of this, SSI checks will be sent out on the following dates in November:
- Friday, Nov. 1
- Friday, Nov. 29
In November, SSI recipients get these two payments plus an extra payment on December 31 because January 1 is a holiday. When this happens, the US government agency has to move the payment to the previous business day.
So, people who get SSI are not affected. Also, when the Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) is finally released on October 10, this yearly increase will be added to all new SSI checks starting in January 2025.
This means that people who get SSI will get the following amounts next year.
SSI benefits | Social Security checks | 2.5% COLA increase | Extra income |
On average | $698 | $715 | $17 |
Individuals | $943 | $967 | $24 |
Couples | $1,415 | $1,450 | $35 |
Essential person | $472 | $484 | $12 |
Applying for the SSI check payment will be easier from now on
Americans who want to apply for SSI check payments will be able to use a new, faster process later this year, the Social Security Administration (SSA) said last Monday.
The press release says that the new online system, iClaim, will have questions that are easier to understand so that the process goes faster for both applicants and judges.
But because the new system was being put in place so quickly, not all claimants would be able to use it right away.
People who have never been married, are between the ages of 18 and 65, are applying for both Social Security and SSI benefits at the same time, and are applying for the first time can use the December phase.
People who will benefit from this application should also know that the second part of its growth is set to start in 2025.
