The murder of a 17-year-old girl in Farnhamville has led to charges against a man from Gowrie for abuse of a corpse and failure to reveal known location.
Court records show that Nathaniel Bevers-McGivney, who is 21 years old, is being held in the Carroll County Jail.
According to the criminal charge, a woman called the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office on Sunday just before 11 p.m. to say that her daughter was missing.
She and her other daughter were going around looking for her missing daughter when they saw Bevers-McGivney. She was “covered in apparent blood” and had the missing daughter’s scooter and other personal belongings on her.
The criminal charge says that when police asked Bevers-McGivney about the blood on his clothes, he asked to speak to a lawyer. He was taken into custody and taken to the Carroll County Jail while the probe went on.
Monday just after 9 a.m., the body of the lost girl was found. According to the criminal charge, the place where the girl’s body was found “suggests that Bevers-McGivney intentionally hid” the body to hide a crime and that he intentionally hid the location so that a crime could not be found.
It is not clear if there are going to be more charges.
A representative from the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation has already told KCCI that one person has been arrested in connection with the death of a 17-year-old girl.
KCCI had been told that police in Calhoun County were looking for a girl who had gone missing. In Farnhamville, the girl’s body has been found.
Crime scene tape was used to keep people out of Farnhamville City Park, which had more than a dozen evidence markers with possible hints for police.
As police were looking into the scene, KCCI saw what looked like blood on the ground in the park. Police from the DCI were there, along with deputies from the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office and the Greene County Sheriff’s Office.
In an email sent to parents on Monday, the Southeast Valley School District said:
“It breaks our hearts to hear about the death of a Jaguar high school student.” Because we care about how this event has affected people, there will be no district games or practices this afternoon or evening (September 23, 2024).
People who need it can get help from counseling services. For help, please call the office of your attendance center.
In addition to Farnhamville and Dayton, the school system also has buildings in Burnside and Gowrie.
Superintendent of Southeast Valley Brian Johnson sent out another message late Monday afternoon:
“It makes me very sad to tell you about a terrible loss in our school community.” We have heard that a student at Southeast Valley High School has died. Our thoughts are with their family and friends during this terrible time.
Southeast Valley Schools really cares about its kids, and we all know that this is a very tough time for everyone. We need to support each other during times of loss like these, whether it is through calming talks, a shoulder to lean on, or getting the help we need.
Our school counselors are ready to talk to any students who are affected by this event, even if they do not know the student directly or if it makes them think of other losses.
If you want to talk to a school psychologist or a member of the local clergy, please call the main office or the counseling office in your school building.
Please be kind to the student’s family and friends and remember them in your prayers and thoughts. Getting help for yourself is also important to remember if you are having a hard time. No one should feel alone right now because we are all in this together.
