In the middle of Southern Humboldt, South Fork High School’s Homecoming is more than just an event that happens once a year. It is a celebration of community and the beautiful nature that surrounds us.
In Northern California’s tall redwoods and twisting rivers, our small towns get together every fall in Miranda to see people we have not seen in years.
We are thankful to live in a rural area where the pace may be slower but the bonds between people are stronger with every cheer from the seats.
Homecoming brings the whole region together in a way that feels like family, whether it is cheering for the Cubs on the soccer field, getting snacks at the football game, or watching the king or queen be crowned as the sun goes down behind the hills.
Not only is South Fork back home, but so are all the small towns in northwest California, from Willits to Crescent City and Weaverville to Ferndale. Now is the time for all of us to value our roots.
“Around the World” is this year’s theme for South Fork, which makes this writer think that even though our youth may one day move to faraway places, there is something special about living in this area.
From the misty mornings coming in off the Pacific to the tall redwoods and beautiful rivers that wind through our state, to the golden hills and the tall Trinity Alps, our natural beauty is unmatched, and people come from all over the world to see it.
It is right outside our back door here in this part of California.
Because South Fork is our alma mater, we are covering their homecoming. But we know that SoHum fans love their school just as much as we do. This weekend is return, and it has already been set up in many other places.
It is also a chance for all of us to remember where we came from, the unique culture of northwest California, and the bonds that last for generations.
