If you do not breathe on a hotel bed before going to sleep, you are not a real person!
It might seem like an odd way to start a vacation to huff and puff on a mattress, but it is how this flight attendant who is afraid of bedbugs can relax before hitting the sheets.
Hannah, a rising star in the world of cabin crew from Chicago, said in a popular TikTok video, “The first thing we do in every hotel room that we come to is check for bedbugs.”
“Bedbugs are drawn to the carbon dioxide you breathe out,” the brunette, who is new to working as a flight attendant and registered nurse, said.
Her over 50,000 online viewers heard about her best ways to catch bitty bloodsuckers from her uncle, who has worked in the airplane business for more than 13 years.
Hannah went on, “so I flip up the corners of the mattress and start breathing on the bed.”
And she is not just making things up.
Experts say that bedbugs are drawn to people because of the carbon dioxide we breathe out and the heat we give off.
A group of entomologists at Rutgers University also found that “CO2 is an effective alternative to conventional fumigants for eliminating bedbugs hiding in infested household items such as clothing, shoes, books, electronics, sofas, and so on.”
Pests are so bad that most people would do almost anything to get rid of them. This is especially true in big cities like Paris and New York, where they are known to be very common.
A recent first-class cloud cruise on American Airlines from New York City to Detroit was ruined when a passenger saw a bloodthirsty bedbug crawling up their leg at 30,000 feet.
The angry flire yelled on Reddit, “I put it on the cocktail napkin to show the [flight attendant], who promptly told the Captain over the phone/intercom.” They attached a picture of the bug as proof. “Hope no latecomers got on my checked bag or backpack.”
But Hannah’s hacks make things much worse than hope.
The travel expert says, “you need to pull up all the sheets and check the corners to see if there are any bugs.” This way, neither she nor her online audience will sleep with the little devils while they are on the go.
Check for bed bugs all the time.
“Putting a bar of soap at the end of your bed is another thing you can do,” she said. “The bar of soap gets rid of the bedbugs.”
Even though it might seem funny, Hannah says that getting bitten by those gross bugs is not something to laugh about.
She warned, “Bedbugs are no joke.” “Their bites hurt, are red, big, and make you swell up whenever they happen.”
“So make sure you look for bugs in your bed.”
