That is the Ole Miss team we have all been waiting for.
At the high level, it has been a little hit or miss, but that was a great game against a Georgia team that has the talent to be in the running for the national title.
Really. Yes, it does. If Georgia is lucky, it will play an 11-seed body even though it is a 1-seed team.
What will happen with the SEC title race, the College Football Playoff, and the rest of the season now that Ole Miss is really back in the running?
Ole Miss 28, Georgia 10
Yes, Ole Miss is really, really back in the CFP and SEC mix again.
It lost to LSU and made a terrible mistake against Kentucky, but now it beats Georgia. Do not worry about anything else; Ole Miss is now a made team. The people in charge of the College Football Playoff will remember that kind of win for a long time. But…
There’s too much traffic for Ole Miss to win the SEC Championship.
It is possible, but a lot of crazy things would have to happen for the Rebels to play for the SEC title. Their loss to LSU hurts for tiebreakers, and their loss to Kentucky hurts for other reasons.
Texas at Texas A&M (both have one loss as this is written) gets even bigger, Tennessee becomes a bigger player, and the last few weeks in the SEC will be a huge mess, but if you are reading this after all the fun, LSU is now in a GREAT position if it beats Alabama, and Ole Miss is in tie-breaker trouble if Alabama wins.
Ole Miss with this win should be in the College Football Playoff.
Again, even if Georgia isn’t the killer we all thought it would be, it’s still GEORGIA. Ole Miss should beat a depleted Florida, and there shouldn’t be a problem against Mississippi State. Win those two, be 10-2, and grab a 9 or 10 seed.
Georgia’s College Football Playoff chances are still solid.
Do not forget that the people who decide the College Football Playoff love what they know. Even though everything is supposed to be based on this season, Georgia will still get a lot of extra time.
TN is where it all ends now.
If you beat the Vols next week, everything should be fine, even though Georgia Tech is still to play. Of course, you should not worry about UMass, but those two tests against Tennessee and the Yellow Jackets are good.
Now that Georgia Tech beat Miami, getting that win would mean more. And beating the Vols would be a big deal, of course.
Let us say 10-2 Georgia gets in. They would be seeded behind Ole Miss and would probably have to travel to play a bad 6, 7, or 8 seed that does not want to play this team in the playoffs.
SEC Tie-Breakers. So what’s going to happen now?
Without going into every crazy idea, let us be honest…
–The Texas at Texas A&M winner will get into the SEC Championship.
– This is being written before LSU and Alabama go at it. Assuming Georgia wins out, Alabama is suddenly in decent shape if it beats the Tigers, and as long as there isn’t a whiff against at Florida, Vanderbilt or Oklahoma, LSU is realistically in if it takes down the Tide.
– If Tennessee beats Mississippi State – still to be played as this is being written – and wins at Georgia and at Vanderbilt, then it’s in if LSU loses along the way. Otherwise it gets into the tie-breakers.
– So for now, assume Texas or Texas A&M is in, and then get ready for a battle for that second spot.
