On Wednesday, Oct. 16, a man from Jamestown was given a 10-year prison term, with two years suspended, for his part in a fentanyl overdose that left his 2-year-old child unconscious.
Southeast District Court Judge Daniel Narum gave the term after turning down a plea deal that the lawyers in the case had suggested.
Christopher William Johnson, who is 40 years old, admitted to the June crime of child endangering, which is a Class B felony. As part of a plea deal, several charges linked to the case were dropped. These included reckless endangerment and drug possession.
Johnson got credit for the 12 days he spent in jail, and he will be on controlled probation for two years after he gets out. He was charged with putting his child in danger by giving them access to fentanyl in the house, which created a high risk of harm.
The case began on June 2, when officials in Jamestown were called to a report of a 2-year-old who was not responding. First rescuers gave the child Narcan and took them to Jamestown Regional Medical Center to get treatment and make sure they were stable.
In court papers, Johnson admitted that he used fentanyl at home, fell asleep, and woke up to find his child unconscious.
