Many Americans will get an extra Social Security check in November because of a mistake in the normal payment schedule. It will happen in less than 10 days.
The Social Security Administration sends five rounds of payments every month.
SSI recipients get their first payment on the first of the month, and retirees, survivors, and disabled people get theirs on the third of the month if they started getting benefits before May 1997, and on the second, third, and fourth Wednesdays if they started getting benefits after that date.
If you get a Social Security check from the SSA now, find out more about the people who will get an extra payment next month.
Which Americans will get an extra Social Security check in November?
The Social Security Administration’s payment schedule for 2024–2025 says that some people who claim Social Security will get two checks in November, one on November 1, 2024, and another on November 29, 2024.
The check on November 29, on the other hand, is not a bonus payment. This is a way for people who get SSI to get their money on days when banks are not open.
Still, people who get SSI will still get a check in December that is meant to cover their January bills. Just at the end of the month on December 31, 2024.
This trend of getting the next month’s check in the month before will continue for a few more months in 2025, until March, when there will be no checks.
After that, the payment plan will go back to how it normally is. Most people who claim Social Security get their money on the second, third, or fourth Wednesday of each month, based on their birthday.
SSI recipients, on the other hand, usually get their money on the first of every month. These people include the blind, the crippled, and people over 65 who do not have much money.
People who get SSI rarely get two payments in a month, and the first of the month usually comes on a weekday.
The Social Security Administration also released the cost-of-living adjustment for 2025, which will mean that benefits will go up by 2.5%. It is one of the smallest benefit boosts I can remember seeing recently.
How much money will SSI recipients get in their extra Social Security check?
Based on the current rules from the Social Security Administration and the 2.5% cost of living adjustment (COLA), people who get Supplemental Security Income (SSI) will get the following numbers in 2025:
SSI benefits | Social Security checks | 2.5% COLA increase | Extra income |
On average | $698 | $715 | $17 |
Individuals | $943 | $967 | $24 |
Couples | $1,415 | $1,450 | $35 |
Essential person | $472 | $484 | $12 |
Even though the extra money may not seem like much, it will help more than 7 million people who get SSI pay their bills and, in some cases, get out of poverty.
Also, keep in mind that these people will be the only ones getting the bigger Social Security check on December 31st this year, since January 1st is a holiday. Because of this, the federal agency moves the payment date to the working day before it happens.
Also, remember that if your Social Security check does not come on the due date, you should wait at least three mailing days before calling customer service.
The delay could be due to a problem with your bank’s system, not the Social Security Administration.
