Mike Tyson, 58, is set for his first sanctioned fight since 2005, when he faces much younger You Tuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul in Texas.
Viewers around the world can watch the eight-round fight on Netflix. It will take place on Friday night at the home of the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys.
The fight was allowed to happen in Texas, but each round was only two minutes long. It is also said that Tyson and Paul, who is 27 years old, will use heavier gloves, which should make punches less powerful.
When he retired, Tyson had a record of 50–6 and 44 knockouts. His last fight was 19 years ago, against Kevin McBride.
Paul became a professional boxer about four years ago. He has fought mostly mixed martial artists and first-time boxers and is 10-1 with seven knockouts.
The fight was supposed to happen on July 20, but it had to be pushed back because Tyson got sick on a flight and needed treatment for a stomach ulcer.
When Tyson fought Roy Jones Jr. in a fun show in 2020, when there were no fans, he said it made him believe he could fight again. As fight week went on, the hype got to him, and he hit Paul to end the last fight at the weigh-in on Thursday night.
Reports say Paul is getting between $40 million and $20 million for Tyson. Paul gave his phone number out at a news conference to promote the summer fight.
Tyson has had legal and money problems in the past, but he has said that he is not fighting Paul for the money.
Katie Taylor of Ireland fights Amanda Serrano of Puerto Rico in the co-main event for the undisputed women’s super lightweight title.
There was a split decision in the first fight, which Taylor won in a fight that was fought in front of a packed Madison Square Garden two years ago. It was the first time that women were the main attraction at a boxing match at the famous venue.
