Authorities in Montana are now looking into a man’s death as a murder after first saying it was caused by a bear attack.
Dustin Kjersem’s body was found in a tent in the woods north of Big Sky in Gallatin County on October 12. He was 35 years old and from Belgrade.
The Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office says that someone called and found the horrible scene of Kjersem’s death. At first, the person thought that the guy had been killed by a bear.
The Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife, and Parks sent an agent with “expertise in bear attacks” after the Sheriff’s Office asked for help.
Officials say that agent did not find any bear activity in the area. This made investigators shift their attention to the possibility of murder, which was later confirmed by an autopsy.
Officials from the sheriff’s office said Kjersem died from multiple “chop” cuts. His death was called especially “vicious.”
Kjersem was an experienced outdoorsman who grew up in the area. His sister Jillian Price said he was a loved brother and father who worked hard.
Price asked the people in the area to help them figure out who did this. „Someone in our valley is truly evil and can do terrible things.”
No matter how small the piece of information may seem, anyone who has it is asked to call the police.
The Sheriff’s Office said in a news release, “Please come forward if you saw Dustin or Dustin’s truck, saw anything suspicious, have footage from game cameras or in-vehicle cameras from the area, or just saw something that does not seem right.” “The investigation could depend on even the smallest detail.”
Galatin County Sheriff Dan Springer said he can not say right now if there is a threat to the town.
Springer said, “Right now we do not know enough to say for sure, but we do know that someone killed someone in a very gross way.” “So please pay attention if you are in the woods.” “You need to stay alert.”
