In Indiana, a young mother was sentenced after her six-month-old son was found in a terrible state, covered in blood and with more than 50 rat bites. More information about this case shows that the baby was severely neglected and lived in dangerous conditions, which has now led to major legal consequences for the parents.
Emergency services ran to a house on September 3, 2023, after getting a distressing call about a baby who needed medical help right away. The baby’s father, David S., shockingly told the police that he found his son “covered in blood” with injuries so bad that the baby’s fingers looked like they had been chewed off.
As soon as they got there, first responders gave the baby critical care and quickly took it to a nearby hospital. For further treatment, the baby needed to be airlifted to a specialized facility in Indianapolis right away.
At the hospital, the baby’s injuries were horrifyingly bad. Doctors said the child had more than 50 bites on his face, cheek, and nose alone, and that he also had other wounds all over his body.
Because of how badly he was hurt, several fingers on his right hand had to be cut off because the injuries exposed bone. The medical staff also gave the baby a blood transfer to make up for the blood loss that was so close to killing him.
When the cops went to the family’s house, they found disturbing living conditions. The baby’s cot was only three feet from his parents’ bed in a room that was full of unorganized mess, half-eaten food, and rat poop.
Based on the large amount of blood found in the bassinet and signs of rodents living in the room, detectives were left with a very negative impression of the child’s surroundings.
The mother, Angel S., who is 29 years old, faced the results of her actions in court. She was given a four-year sentence, with one year served credit and the rest suspended while she was on probation.
Her guilty plea was to one count of neglecting a dependent person. Her new standards include getting a mental health evaluation and following through with any treatments that are suggested.
David got a harsher term because he was directly involved and had been convicted before. He got 16 years in jail after being found guilty of child neglect and other charges that had to do with the other kids living in the house.
The seriousness and nature of this case have had a huge impact on the society and on the police. Authorities and judges in the area were upset about what happened and said that the tragedy could have been avoided if the parents had taken the right steps to protect their home and children.
“The victim in this case was a 6-month-old baby who suffered horrific rat bites to his entire body while laying in a bassinet in his home,” said prosecutor D. Moers, thinking about how this case would affect everyone involved. The prosecutor focused on the permanent scarring and shocking lack of care that caused this terrible result.
The end of this case is a stark warning of how important it is to keep children safe and how bad it is to ignore their needs. The town and the government hope that this case will bring attention to the problem and stop it from happening again.
Why isn’t the mother being punished more ? She’s just as responsible as the father.
The baby needs to be removed from that home and given shelter with a loving parent or foster family that will provide a clean safe home for the child to grow in. Also the parents need to be charged minimally with child abuse.
