Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, which used to be called food stamps, are given out by states across the country every month.
Payments for October are still being made. Families with low incomes can get help from SNAP to buy certain things with an Electronic Benefits Transfer card, which works like a debit card and can be used to buy food at certain places.
How much money a household makes each month is based on its size, its gross and net income, and its other needs. The following are the highest amounts that can be charged in the 48 contiguous US states and the DC area until October 1, 2019:
- 1 household member: $292
- 2 members: $536
- 3 members: $768
- 4 members: $975
- 5 members: $1,158
- 6 members: $1,390
- 7 members: $1,536
- 8 members: $1,756
- Each additional member: +$220
The most a family of four can get in Alaska is between $1,258 and $1,953, but in Hawaii it is $1,723. For now, the minimum benefit for all 48 states and the District of Columbia will stay at $23. In Alaska, the least you have to pay each month is between $30 and $47.
In Hawaii, it is $41. The website for the program has full payment schedules and all the details about the increase in SNAP benefits.

What can beneficiaries buy with their new SNAP benefit payments?
As per the U.S. Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Service, your EBT card can be used anywhere that takes food stamps. You can buy any meal to take home, including the ones below:
- Fruits and veggies.
- Meat, chicken, and seafood
- Dairy products
- Breads and Cereals
- Other foods include snacks and non-alcoholic beverages.
- Seeds and plants produce food for the home.
At the point of sale, however, you cannot use an EBT card or food stamps to buy anything other than food.
This includes live animals, vitamins, prescription drugs, supplements, beer, wine, liquor, cigarettes or tobacco, and hot foods. Do not forget that you can check on the SNAP website to see which stores in your state accept the EBT card.
Some beneficiaries can qualify for the D-SNAP benefit payment this month
Because of Hurricane Helene, SNAP benefits were extended in three states. More than 200 people were killed by Hurricane Helene in late September, which hit many states and caused a lot of damage.
The new USDA program called the Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Initiative (D-SNAP) is named after the storm.
Many people know SNAP payments as “food stamps.” They are mostly given to low-income people and families to help them pay for groceries.

People who would not normally be eligible for food stamps but have been hurt by disasters can get D-SNAP.
Recent announcements from the US Department of Agriculture say that some states will be able to get the D-SNAP benefit and others will not. This benefit can be claimed by the following states:
