This week, the Social Security Administration (SSA) said that disabled people who asked for benefits before May 1997 will start getting a new SSDI payment on November 3.
Millions of Americans get Social Security checks every month from the federal government.
But because there are so many people who are supposed to get money, not everyone gets paid on the same day. This year, benefits worth about $1.5 trillion, such as retirement, disability, and widow benefits, will be given out in four monthly payments.
A new SSDI payment was announced for disabled people in November
The Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) program gives millions of dollars every month to disabled people who meet the SSA’s strict requirements.
For example, they must show that they have a disability that keeps them from doing the minimum substantial gainful activity (SGA) and they must have paid Social Security taxes before they got disabled.
As soon as they are accepted into the program, the government agency will use the 2024 Social Security payment schedule to figure out how much to pay them and when to pay them.
For example, people who get benefits from the retirement, survivor, and disability insurance (RSDI) program will get money every month based on when they claimed their first Social Security check and when they were born.
People who got benefits through this program before May 1997, for example, will get them on the third of the month, unless it is a holiday or the weekend. If they claim checks after that date, though, they will get their SSDI payments based on the following rules:
- Friday, November 1st: for retirees, survivors, and disabled people who claimed benefits before May 1997. (Usually, this payment is delivered on the third day of the month, but as November 3rd falls on a weekend, the SSA rescheduled that payment for this day.).
- Second Wednesday, or November 13th: for disabled people whose birth dates fall between the 1st and the 10th
- Third Wednesday, or November 20th: for disabled people whose birth dates fall between the 11th and the 20th
- Fourth Wednesday, or November 27th: for disabled people whose birth dates fall between the 21st and the 31st
The federal government will also give out retirement benefits, which are also known as Social Security benefits, along with SSDI payments.
To figure out these benefits, you take a person’s 35 best working years over the course of their life and adjust them for inflation. The website for the Social Security Administration also says that your maximum benefit is based on when you leave.
For instance, if you left in 2024 at the full retirement age, the most you could get would be $3,822. The most you could get when you leave in 2024, when you are 62 years old, is $2,710. Finally, the most you will get when you retire at age 70 in 2024 is $4,873.
How much money will disabled people receive with the 2.5% COLA increase for 2025?
The Social Security Administration finally confirmed the new cost of living adjustment (COLA) for 2025 on October 10th.
This means that millions of disabled people will get an extra boost in their payments starting on January 3rd for those who started getting benefits before May 1997 and then on January 8th, 15th, and 22nd for everyone else.
The following list shows all of the possible SSDI payment amounts that disabled people in the US will get:
SSDI payment | Social Security checks | 2.5% COLA increase | Extra income |
On average | $1,537 | $1,575 | $38 |
Blind recipients | $2,590 | $2,655 | $65 |
Maximum payment | $3,822 | $3,918 | $96 |
It is clear that the people who get full Social Security benefits, whether they are retired or disabled, will see their payments go up the most.
So, if you want to get the biggest monthly payment, you should talk to a financial planner or Social Security expert who can look over all of the SSA’s rules and make sure you meet all of them so you can get this payment.
Remember that if your SSDI payment does not arrive on time, you should wait at least three mailing days before calling the Social Security Administration or going to your My Social Security Account to get more information about your payments and financial statements.
