Police in the Show-Me State say that a kid in Missouri shot and killed his father over the weekend and then told the dead man’s wife that the killing “had to” happen.
A press statement from the Bates County Sheriff’s Office says that Carter J. Curtis, 18, is being charged with one count of murder in the first degree and one count of armed criminal action.
It is said that the suspect killed the man who adopted him.
The event took place after 11 p.m. on September 28, according to a probable cause statement that the Adrian Police Department made.
The killing happened in a home on 8th Street in Adrian, a small town about 55 miles south of Kansas City that is part of the larger metro area.
The call came in at 11:23 p.m., and Carter said he had shot his father. The cops in the area say they got there around 11:31 p.m. Police say that state cops and/or sheriff’s deputies got there within two minutes of the call for help.
“I arrived on scene,” a police officer wrote in the court package. It was crazy when I met two white women in the driveway.
The cop also wrote that there was a child outside. There are a lot of redactions in the document, but it does say that someone yelled, “He has never been violent!” as the cops started to look around the scene.
Inside, the cop said he could see the victim from the front door. On the kitchen floor, the older guy was lying face down with a clear “gunshot wound to the head.”
A Mossberg Patriot.308 calibre, a bolt-action rifle that is usually used for long-range shooting, was thought to have been used in the murder.
When the gun was found, there was a spent shell casing still in the barrel. “There was a magazine in the gun that did not have any extra bullets in it.”
The person who did the crime was later caught and arrested one block away, according to the sheriff’s office.
In the end, Curtis was arrested exactly 10 minutes after the 911 call, as shown by the probable cause statement.
“Probable Cause” says that the victim’s wife told cops that she woke up to the sound of a gunshot. After that, she supposedly said, she walked into the hallway and Curtis just gave her the gun. She said that after that he just walked down the stairs.
“I already called 911, and I had to,” the killer is said to have told her.
She finally went downstairs by herself. She said she found her husband “face down by the table in the dining room.”
For real, the Bates County Prosecutor’s Office filed charges on Sunday. Curtis said he was not guilty on Monday.
The defendant is being held in the Bates County Jail without release at this time. His next court date is set for Oct. 7.
“I want to thank everyone for how quickly they responded to this,” said Chris Dillon, chief of police in Adrian. It makes me proud that we are all working together to keep this town safe.
We still need to do a lot of research on this, but we can promise the community that there is no new danger related to this incident. We are sorry for the loss of the loved one and send our respects to their family and friends. At this point, we do not have any more details.
