People who get SSI should know that they will not be getting any money in December. Under the yearly plan, people who get SSI are paid on the first of every month, excluding weekends and federal holidays.
For instance, because December 1st falls on a weekend, the Social Security Administration moved that payment to the business day before.
Because of this, the regular payment schedule will change a little, but beneficiaries do not need to worry because they will get their payments early.
Also, because January 1st is a holiday, beneficiaries will get this payment on December 31st. This means that they will be the first ones to get the first increased payment, which includes the COLA rise.
Social Security confirmed beneficiaries won’t receive their regular SSI payments
AARP says that the Social Security Administration (SSA) gives the program its money but does not give out the benefits. Most of Social Security benefits are paid for by income taxes.
The SSI program, on the other hand, is funded by the US Treasury and state-specific supplements.
This program’s goal is to help disabled and elderly people who make less than a certain amount of money. The federal agency says that a child or adult may be eligible for SSI payments if
- Candidates demonstrate little to no revenue, or
- Have limited or no resources, and
- Have more than 65 years, be disabled or blind.
Remember that the highest monthly payment in 2024 will be $943 for a single person and $1,415 for a couple, as long as both are eligible.
But disability benefits, which are sometimes called Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), depend on how much work the person has done in the past.
SSDI helps disabled people who have worked long enough to be eligible for Social Security by giving them money. But remember that you do not need a work history to get into the SSI program.
When will beneficiaries receive their SSI payments during the last two months of the year?
Based on the monthly payment schedule, SSI payments for December will be made on the Friday before the first work day, since December 1st falls on a Sunday this year.
The first business day of the month is often the first day of the month for SSI payments, which are given to disabled and elderly people with low incomes. Because of this, these monthly benefits will be given out on the following dates in November:
- Friday, Nov. 1
- Friday, Nov. 29
People who are on SSI will get two payments in November, plus an extra payment on December 31 because of the holiday on January 1. This means that the US federal agency has to reschedule the payment for the day before.
People who get SSI will not be affected. Also, starting in January 2025, this yearly increase will be added to new SSI checks.
This will happen after the final Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) is released on October 10, 2023. So, next year, people who get SSI will get the following amounts.
SSI benefits | Social Security checks | 2.5% COLA increase | Extra income |
On average | $698 | $715 | $17 |
Individuals | $943 | $967 | $24 |
Couples | $1,415 | $1,450 | $35 |
Essential person | $472 | $484 | $12 |
How can beneficiaries apply for their SSI payments from now on?
If you want to apply for SSI payments in the United States, the Social Security Administration said last Monday that a new, faster application process will be available later this year.
The press release says that the new online system, iClaim, will have easier questions that will make the process go faster for both applicants and judges. But because the new system was put in place so quickly, not all claimants would be able to use it right away.
The SSA says that the December phase is usually open to first-time applicants who are between the ages of 18 and almost 65, have never been married, and are applying for both Social Security and SSI payments at the same time.
Also, the people who will be receiving the application should be told that the second phase of its growth is set to begin in 2025.
