The Social Security Administration plans several Social Security payments every month, such as retirement, disability, and SSI benefits, to make sure that all beneficiaries have enough money to pay their bills, enjoy retirement, and sometimes fight poverty.
This is because the SSA has to send out over 72 million payments every year. To help beneficiaries know exactly when they will receive their monthly benefits, they made an annual payment schedule.
Still, this schedule could change if there are federal holidays or weekends. Find out when, how much, and when you will be paid for retirement, survivor, and disability insurance (RSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) in 2025 if you are currently eligible.
Social Security has confirmed two new changes in the regular payment schedule
The Social Security payment schedule usually gives people five rounds of payments based on the type of program they are eligible for, when they claimed their first benefits, and sometimes, when they were born.
For people on SSI, these payments start on the first of the month. For people on RSDI who got their first Social Security check before May 1997, they start on the third of the month.
The government sends three more payment rounds to RSDI claimants who got benefits after 1997 on the second, third, and fourth Wednesdays of each month after these payments are made.
That being said, this normal schedule will change some months, like January, when payment dates fall on holidays and weekends. People who get SSI will be affected by the two big changes.
Since the first of January is a holiday, these people will get their money early on December 31st. This means that people who get SSI will be the first to get the new, bigger Social Security checks in 2024, which will include the cost of living adjustment (COLA).
Along with this advance payment, people who get Supplemental Security Income will also get other payments early, but those will come in January. The first of February is a weekend, so the Social Security Administration will move that payment to January 31st.
This means that people who are entitled to benefits will not get them in February, but at the end of January. To understand why these changes were made to the regular schedule, please look at the official payment schedule or these January payment dates:
Social Security programs | January |
SSI benefits | – |
RSDI benefits | January 3rd: For those who collected their first check before May 1997 |
RSDI benefits | January 8th: For those who were born between the first and the 10th
January 15th: For those who were born between the eleventh and the 20th January 22nd: For those who were born between the twenty-first and the 31st |
SSI benefits (Extra payments) | January 31st: SSI recipients will receive payments in February because the 1st of February falls on a weekend. |
If your Social Security check did not arrive on time, remember that you should wait at least three mailing days before calling Social Security’s customer service.
The delay could be caused by your bank instead of the government agency.
Also, remember to check your My Social Security account for more information about your monthly payments. This is where you can download financial statements and ask for more Social Security-related processes.
How much will SSI beneficiaries get over the next few months?
As you can see, people who get SSI will get their money on different days during the first three months of the year. We will talk about how much they will make, though.
As an example, the average monthly benefit for people who get SSI in 2024 is $698.
On top of that, they will get two extra payments based on the filing category they chose when they applied for the program. These are currently set at $1,415 for eligible couples and $943 for individuals.
This will change in January 2025, though, because of the new cost of living adjustment (COLA) hike that was approved on October 10, 2018.
Because of the new 2.5% COLA rise for 2025, people who get Supplemental Security Income will now earn an average of $715, which is $17 more than they did before. Also getting $967 and $1,450 are individuals and couples.
