In the US, there are two types of disability rates. One is for people who have been sick or hurt and unable to work for more than a year, which is the strict definition of disability.
These are the two benefits you can get from Social Security if you are disabled in their strictest sense. There are rules you have to follow if you want to get SSDI, which is a weekly payment.
You might still be able to get SSI, though, if your disability has kept you from working enough. That is Supplemental Security Income. People of any age can get it.
Americans on disability payments will be the first to get a COLA
The Social Security Administration (SSA) says that for people who get SSI, the COLA will come first. The rise in the cost of living will be added to their 2024 disability payment.
In January 2025, people who get SSDI will get their money. Get your disability payment with the new COLA as soon as possible. It does not matter, but it would be better.
Disability recipients and retirees, on the other hand, will have to wait until October 10, 2024, to see the COLA increase in their bank accounts or mailboxes.
Dates for when your COLA will go up if you get disability benefits
People who get SSI on December 31, 2024, will get the 2025 COLA raise. In other words, they will get their money early, on January 1, 2025. SSA sends money the business day before a holiday when the government is closed.
Do not forget that the first people who get SSDI and the 2025 COLA will be the ones who get paid on the third. For them to get the rise in the COLA on January 3, 2025, they had to be getting disability payments before May 1997.
Disability payments will go up on January 8, 15, and 22 to keep up with the cost of living. There will be a longer wait for people who get SSDI and whose birthday is between January 21 and December 31.
Social Security confirms that some people who get disability benefits will not be getting a 2025 COLA increase in 2024.
