More than 72 million payments are sent by the Social Security Administration every month on specific dates to eligible retired workers, survivors, disabled people, and people who get Supplemental Security Income (SSI).
There are, however, months when holidays or weekends might change this regular schedule. In December, for example, there will be three big changes to the regular schedule that everyone who gets help with it should know about.
Find out about the next payment dates here if you get retirement, survivor, and disability insurance (RSDI) or SSI rights now.
Social Security makes a complete change to December payment dates
Usually, the SSA sends out five rounds of payments every month. This way, all beneficiaries can get their money to cover their daily living costs and, in some cases, like SSI recipients, to make ends meet or fight poverty.
The Social Security Administration (SSA) starts sending payments to people who get SSI on the first of each month. On the third of each month, they send payments to people who got RSDI before May 1997.
After these two payments, the federal agency will send payments to the rest of the RSDI recipients every second, third, and fourth Wednesday of the month.
But in December, there are three big changes to the normal schedule that people who get benefits should be aware of.
First, people who get SSI will not get their regular payments on the first of the month because it is a weekend. Instead, their December payments will arrive on November 29th.
The people who get these benefits will also get their January benefits on December 31 because January 1 is New Year’s Eve.
Finally, people who get RSDI and were born between December 21 and December 31 will not get their regular benefits on the fourth Wednesday of the month because that is Christmas Eve.
Instead, they will get their benefits on Tuesday, December 24th. So there are no misunderstandings, here are all the dates you need to pay for the next month:
Individuals with disabilities, survivors, and retirees (who collected checks before 1997) | December 3rd | Beneficiaries who meet requirements and claimed before benefits 1997 |
Individuals with disabilities, survivors, and retirees (who collected checks after1997) | December 11th
December 18th December 24th |
Day of birth: 1st–10th.
Day of birth: 11th–20th. Day of birth: 21st-31st. |
Extra SSI payment | December 31st (Wednesday) | Since January 1st falls on a weekend, beneficiaries will receive their January benefits on this date. |
How much money will all Social Security beneficiaries receive in December?
December brings millions of dollars in payments to people who are eligible. The amount of each payment will depend on the person’s situation and the program’s requirements.
For example, to get retirement benefits, a person must be at least 66 years old, have worked for at least 10 years, and have paid Social Security taxes for that time.
People who want to get Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) must also meet the tax requirements for Social Security and show that they have a disability that keeps them from doing the substantial gainful activity (SGA) that the SSA requires.
Lastly, people who want to get Supplemental Security Income (SSI) should meet the requirements for income and resources.
Each program has its own rules and payment amounts, so we would like to give you a list of all the fixed payment amounts for this year.
Also, remember that the 3.2% increase from the cost of living adjustment (COLA) for 2024 is already built into these Social Security payment amounts.
