People in the United States who get Social Security benefits are about to get a big boost. Before the cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) rise in 2025, beneficiaries will be able to get an extra check in November of this year.
The Social Security Administration (SSA) says these changes are meant to protect the most vulnerable groups while also adjusting for inflation.
The COLA tries to make sure that payments keep up with the rising costs of basic goods and services. Social Security payments for retirees and people who get Supplemental Security Income (SSI) will go up by 2.5% in 2025.
Social Security changes in the final weeks of 2024 for retirees, survivors, disabled people and SSI recipients
In January, people who get Social Security will get more money because of the cost of living adjustment (COLA). In contrast, people who get SSI will see a change in how much money they get starting December 31, 2024.
The different start dates are because of the calendar system the sovereign body made. It is hoped that these changes will help keep Social Security benefits as a reliable source of income for more than 72.5 million Americans.
The SSA tries to change payments based on changes in the economy and prices, so the 2.5% rise may not seem like a big deal compared to previous years.
Because of a mistake in the calendar, people who get SSI will get an extra payment at the end of November. These payments are usually sent out on the first of every month, but if that day is a holiday or weekend, the checks are sent out the business day before.
The payment for the last month of the year will be moved to Friday, November 29, 2024, since December 1, 2024, will be a Sunday. This is why people who get SSI will get an extra check at the end of the year.
In the first few months of 2025, the same thing will happen, with advance payments due at the end of the month before. The January check will be sent to the beneficiaries on December 31, 2024.
The February check will be sent to the beneficiaries on January 31, 2025. And the March check will be sent to the beneficiaries on February 28, 2025. When April comes around, things will go back to normal.
Social Security payment dates that beneficiaries should be aware of
The Social Security Administration sends out more than 70 million payments every month.
Because of this, everyone who gets a payment needs to write down the dates of their payments on a calendar so they can plan their spending and stay within their budget.
Based on when you will get paid by Social Security in 2025, here are the dates you should mark on your calendar:
- November 29, 2024: delivery of the supplementary check for December 2024.
- December 31, 2024: Advance payment for January 2025.
- January 31, 2025: delivery of the check for February.
- February 28, 2025: Payment for March 2025.
- From April 2025 onwards, payments will be delivered on the first of each month.
Remember that you should wait at least three mailing days before calling the federal agency if your Social Security check does not arrive on the due date.
