We all know what is coming next: winter, which means snow, which means fall in New York.
If it snows in New York, when is the first snow that we can remember?
Based on historical records, these are the typical times when it starts to snow in New York State.
November 8th in Buffalo
November 8th in Rochester
November 6th in Syracuse
November 6th in Binghamton and November 16th in Albany
December 14th in New York City
The National Weather Service says that 0.1 inch or more of snow in 24 hours is measurable snow.
We will see snowflakes in these places again and again, of course. Though snowflakes usually do not stick around for long or add up to much, they do not get to the “measurable” level until November.
All of those towns, except for New York City, will be competing for the “Golden Snowball” again. It is given to the New York City that gets the most snow in the winter.
Buffalo won the title last year, even though it had two huge storms in November and December.
With only 71.4 inches of snow, Buffalo had the least amount of snow on the list. The usual amount of snow is 95.4 inches.
Syracuse came in second with 60.8 inches, and Rochester was third with 52.5 inches. Both of those totals were a lot less than the yearly standards.
Should we get ready for a lot of snow this winter, or will it stay the same?
