Because of this, the SSA has to do more to make sure your Social Security benefits are safe. This is where the changes are put into place. People who use Social Security should no longer log in with just a username and password.
Instead, they should use two-step authentication, which requires two different forms of identification to make sure the computers know who you are.

In essence, this is done by having two kinds of keys: one that you know and one that you have.
In this case, you would use your normal username and password along with a temporary code generated by a separate mechanism, like an SMS or a code generated by a dedicated app like Google Authenticator.
