In the past week, at least two former Iowa football players have passed away. Roger Jerrick, who was portrayed from 1971 to 1973, passed away on September 21 at the age of 72, and D. Hugh Drake, who was portrayed from 1956 to 1958, passed away on September 16 at the age of 87.
Drake, who was born and raised in Shenandoah, was an offensive lineman who played for Forest Evashevski. He won two Rose Bowls in 1957, one one against Oregon State and the other one against California.
In 1959, he began his career as a guard and went on to play in the Canadian Football League from that point on. Following his playing career, he went on to become a football coach at Upper Iowa University.
Subsequently, he went on to become a high school football coach at Estherville, Grundy Center, Des Moines East, and Des Moines Lincoln respectively.
