Harrowing video captures the moment a masked man allegedly attempted to abduct a child on a New York sidewalk over the weekend.
According to the New York Police Department, the incident occurred around 3:30 p.m. on Saturday in Brooklyn.
In the video, the suspect crosses the street and approaches a father walking with his two children. The suspect is seen lifting the victim from the ground, but the father pushes him away.
“Unknown person approached them and picked up the 6-year-old boy. They then tried unsuccessfully to separate him from his father and walked away,” police said in a statement sent to USA TODAY.
The suspect then went into a nearby building, while the father kept walking down the block without getting into any more trouble.
The suspect was arrested the next day
Police said that the suspect, Stephan Stowe, who is 28 years old, was caught on Sunday.
He is being charged with second-degree attempt kidnapping, first-degree harassment, and putting a child in danger.
Local news station WABC was told by the victim’s mother that the suspect is their neighbor. She also said that the event has traumatized her child and that he or she will go to therapy.
