If you or someone you know is low on money, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which used to be called Food Stamps, can help them buy food.
It works all year in Florida, so it is important to know when your benefits will start coming in for December.
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) pays for SNAP across the country.
In Florida, however, the Department of Children and Families (DCF) is in charge of making sure residents are eligible, processing applications, and giving out benefits to those who qualify.
People who qualify get an Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card, which can be used like a debit card to buy certain foods at stores that accept them.
The amount of benefits is based on each person’s income, expenses, and the number of people living in their home. They are added every month.
Low-income families can use the program to buy basic foods like meat, vegetables, bread, cereals, fruits, dairy products, and non-alcoholic drinks. They can also buy seeds and plants that grow food.
SNAP cannot be used for things that are not food, like alcohol, tobacco, vitamins, supplements, pet food, or hot ready-to-eat foods that are sold in stores.
The rules are meant to make sure that the money is spent on food that people need, and SNAP can be taken away if rules are broken.
