“But they have not played anyone yet?”
That is what you will probably get from fans on any social media site who want to talk about how great their team is doing.
And that is exactly what the committee has to do tonight, when the first College Football Playoff Top 25 charts come out.
How good are all of the top teams right now? Should a team get more credit for having a tough schedule, or does having a great record mean it played a lot of bad teams?
Who you played and when you played it matter as the process goes on. At this point, which of the 25 teams in the College Football Playoff Top 25 has had the easiest schedules so far? Which teams have had the hardest?
Easiest College Football Schedules of the Season (So Far)
Of course, you can be very good and still play a pretty easy schedule. The first few games of the 2023 Michigan season proved that. But these five teams are the ones that really mean it when they say they “have not played anyone.”
Once more, these are only the teams that really have a chance to be in the CFP Top 25.
5. BYU (8-0)
Unfortunately for BYU, they have to play some bad teams. However, beating Arizona (3-6), Oklahoma State (3-6), and UCF (4-5) is not a big deal right now, and Southern Illinois and Wyoming do not make the schedule any better. But SMU and Kansas State were great opponents.
4. Indiana (9-0)
The Hoosiers have not beaten a team with six wins yet. What was the best win? It was at Michigan State on the road. When they play Nebraska at home? Western Illinois, Charlotte, FIU, Maryland, FIU, and Northwestern are the schools that will not be going bowling.
3. Tulane (7-2)
It was good to play Kansas State (7-2) and Louisiana (7-1). It is still good to play Oklahoma (5-4), but there are a lot of average games coming up. SE There were too many breaks between Louisiana, UAB, Rice, and Charlotte.
2. Louisiana (7-1)
It’s been a great year for the Ragin’ Cajuns, but the date against Tulane – a loss – was the only one against an FBS team with a winning record. Wake Forest (4-4) is the only game against a Power Four program.
1. Army
It’s a wonderful story, but it helps that Army has played absolutely no one who’d be a problem for almost all good teams.
The Knights started the season with a win over Lehigh, there has yet to be a game against a Power Four program, and no FBS team among the seven has a winning record.
And then there’s the opposite side. What five teams have the toughest schedules so far – at least among those likely to be in the College Football Playoff Top 25 mix.
Toughest College Football Schedules of the Season (So Far)
Again, these are only the teams that have a realistic shot of being ranked in the CFP Top 25.
5. Texas A&M (7-2)
The problem is that the Aggies lost the one big game, which was the first one against Notre Dame (7-1).
They did not have to play McNeese State or Mississippi State (2-7), and beating them was not a big deal. But along with the Irish, they played 6-2 Missouri and LSU and lost on the road to a strong South Carolina (5-3).
4. Georgia (7-1)
Georgia had a blank spot. It was not easy, but they beat Tennessee Tech, Kentucky (3-6), Auburn (3-6), and Mississippi State (2-7). But the road games at Texas and Alabama were the worst.
3. Ohio State (7-1)
To start the season, there was a layup against Akron. Right now, Michigan State has a losing record, but seven of their eight games are against teams that are likely to go bowling.
The Buckeyes beat Oregon, which had never lost before, on the road. They also gave Penn State its only loss.
2. Louisville (6-3)
It is both rough and simple. It is not their fault that they started the season against Austin Peay. They also beat Notre Dame (7-1) on the road, SMU (8-1), Miami (9-0), and they just beat Clemson (6-2).
1. Alabama (6-2)
They will have an even tougher time this week when they play a 6-2 LSU team.
Two teams, Georgia and Tennessee, are both 7-1. Vanderbilt and Western Kentucky are both 6-2. USF is the only team that has not won any of its eight games so far; it is 4-4.
