The woman who killed a Harris County sergeant while drunk behind the wheel has been given a long prison term.
After being found guilty of manslaughter by intoxication of a peace officer on Thursday, Lavillia Spry, 42, was given 43 years in jail. Before she can get out of jail, she has to spend at least half of her sentence, which is 21 years and six months.
Because Spry hit and killed Sergeant Ramon Gutierrez while driving drunk in the early morning hours of January 24, 2022, he was found guilty. Gutierrez was killed in northeast Harris County while working as a traffic cop when he wasn’t supposed to be there.
After the sentence, Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg shot down the idea that the accident was an accident. She said that Spry chose to put lives in risk by driving drunk.
Ogg said, “This wasn’t a mistake.” “Driving drunk is not an accident, and killing someone while driving drunk is a likely outcome. This could have been avoided.” He could be living and with his family today if she had made a different choice.
Gutierrez’s family had the chance to say what Spry’s actions meant to them the day after he was sentenced.
One of the sergeant’s sons, Alfred Gutierrez, said in court, “We’re just happy that justice was done and that my father will be remembered for the hero that he was.”
